For a suitable choice of the cube category, we construct a topology on it such that sheaves with respect to this topology are exactly simplicial sets (thus establishing simplicial sets as a subcategory of the category of cubical sets). We then generalize the construction of the homotopy coherent nerve to cubical categories and establish an analog of Lurie’s straightening–unstraightening construction.

In this paper, we analyze and compare three of the many algebraic structures that have been used for modeling dependent type theories: categories with families, split type-categories, and representable maps of presheaves. We study these in the setting of univalent foundations, where the relationships between them can be stated more transparently. Specifically, we construct maps between the different structures and show that these maps are equivalences under suitable assumptions.

We then analyze how these structures transfer along (weak and strong) equivalences of categories, and, in particular, show how they descend from a category (not assumed univalent/saturated) to its Rezk completion. To this end, we introduce relative universes, generalizing the preceding notions, and study the transfer of such relative universes along suitable structure.

We work throughout in (intensional) dependent type theory; some results, but not all, assume the univalence axiom. All the material of this paper has been formalized in Coq, over the UniMath library.

This is the third of the three papers into which the preprint Products of families of types on the C-systems defined by a universe category evolved during publication.

We define the notion of a (P,tilde-P)-structure on a universe p in a locally Cartesian closed category category with a binary product structure and construct a (∏,λ)-structure on the C-systems CC(C,p) from a (P,tilde-P)-structure on p. We then define homomorphisms of C-systems with (∏,λ)-structures and functors of universe categories with (P,tilde-P)-structures and show that our construction is functorial relative to these definitions. Work on proving consistency of the intensional Martin-Löf type theory with a sequence of univalent universes ("MLTT+UA") led to the understanding that in type theory we do not know how to construct an interpretation of syntax from a model of inference rules. That is, we now have the concept of a model of inference rules and the concept of an interpretation of the syntax and a conjecture that implies that the former always defines the latter. This conjecture, stated as the statement that the term model is an initial object in the category of all models of a given kind, is called the Initiality Conjecture. In my talk I will outline the various parts of this new vision of the theory of syntax and semantics of dependent type theories.

UniMath refers to several things. It is a univalent foundation of mathematics. It is the subset of Coq in which this foundation is currently implemented and it is a library of formalized mathematics written using this implementation. My talk will be mostly about the library. I will give examples of problems whose constructions have been recently formalized in the UniMath as study problems by graduate students. I will give an example of a more complex problem whose construction has been recently formalized as a part of a paper accepted to a conference proceedings. Finally, I will outline a direction for the future development of the UniMath that requires constructions to considerably more complex problems that can only be stated in the univalent type theory and, as far as I know, have never been solved either formally or informally.

Toward the end of the talk, Voevodsky says it would be good to find a constructive proof to replace the "Merkurjev-Suslin transfinite argument" in the proof of Bloch-Kato. Merkurjev says they did not use any transfinite induction in their argument, and has provided the following additional details: "Let F be a field, S the set of all n-symbols over F (modulo l) and T the set of all finite subsets of S. We order T by inclusion. For any A in T let X_A be the product of norm varieties X_a for all symbols a in A. If A is a subset of a finite set B in T, we have projection X_B -> X_A and hence a field homomorphism F(X_A) -> F(X_B). Let F_1 be the colimit of this system of fields. Then construct a field extension F_2/F_1 the same way (replacing F by F1), etc. We get a tower of field extensions F in F_1 in F_2 in ... Finally, let K be the union of all F_i. Clearly, every n-symbol over K is trivial modulo l." See also Theorem 1.12 of the book The Norm Residue Theorem in Motivic Cohomology by Haesemeyer and Weibel, which presents a transfinite version of the argument.

The paper introduces and studies "canonical" presheaves on C-systems defined by universe categories. It is the second of the three papers into which the preprint Products of families of types in the C-systems defined by a universe category evolved during publication.

This paper was written to present the constructions that were originally introduced for the proof of functoriality of (∏,λ) structures obtained from the (P,tilde-P) structures. In the process of writing up this proof it became clear that the main objects required for it -- the "almost representations" μn and tilde-μn of the presheaves Obn and tilde-Obn on the C-systems defined by locally Cartesian closed universe categories with binary product structures and the lemmas describing the behavior of these "almost representations" with respect to the universe category functors, play important role in the general theory that is quite independent from the analysis of the ∏,λ,β,η system of inference rules. This led to the decision to present these constructions together with the important intermediate ones such as Sig and Dp in a separate paper.

C-systems were introduced by J. Cartmell under the name "contextual categories". In this note we study sub-objects and quotient-objects of C-systems. In the case of the sub-objects we consider all sub-objects while in the case of the quotient-objects only {\em regular} quotients that in particular have the property that the corresponding projection morphism is surjective both on objects and on morphisms. It is one of several short papers based on the material of the Notes on Type Systems by the same author.

This paper has two sequels, forming a series of three papers:

C-systems appear as the central class of objects in the mathematical study of type theories. They are essentially algebraic structures, i.e., algebraic structures where some operations are defined only for arguments that themselves satisfy equations on more basic operations. This paper continues the series of papers that develop a new approach to syntax and semantics of dependent type theories. Here we study the interpretation of the rules of the identity types in the intensional Martin-Löf type theories on the C-systems that arise from universe categories. In the first part of the paper we develop constructions that produce interpretations of these rules from certain structures on universe categories while in the second we study the functoriality of these constructions with respect to functors of universe categories. The results of the first part of the paper play a crucial role in the construction of the univalent model of type theory in simplicial sets.

Voevodsky submitted this paper for publication, and a referee's report has been received. There may be further work to do before it can be published.

We introduce the notion of a (∏,λ)-structure on a C-system and show that C-systems with (∏,λ)-structures are constructively equivalent to contextual categories with products of families of types. We then show how to construct (∏,λ)-structures on C-systems of the form CC(C,p) defined by a universe p in a locally Cartesian closed category C from a simple pull-back square based on p. In the last section we prove a theorem that asserts that our construction is functorial.

B-systems are algebras (models) of an essentially algebraic theory that is expected to be constructively equivalent to the essentially algebraic theory of C-systems which is, in turn, constructively equivalent to the theory of contextual categories. The theory of B-systems is closer in its form to the structures directly modeled by contexts and typing judgements of (dependent) type theories and further away from categories than contextual categories and C-systems.

Experimental library of univalent formalization of mathematics, а также скачать и установить программу Кок.

Google-translate renders that as: Coq is a program that provides a set of tools for effective work with formal reasoning in the modern (dependent, polymorphic) theory of types. On the basis of such theories of types, univalent bases are formulated in which primitive objects are not sets, but infinity-groupoids or, equivalently, homotopy types. Therefore, using Coq, one can "write" univalent mathematics in such a way that the correctness of reasoning is checked by a computer. I will show some of the library of constructions that we have now, including the construction of the localization of commutative rings, and we will try to present a construction of the spectrum of a commutative ring. It will be useful for students to see the article "An experimental library of univalent formalization of mathematics", as well as to download and install the Coq program.

This is the second paper in a series, starting with Subsystems and regular quotients of C-systems, that aims to provide mathematical descriptions of objects and constructions related to the first few steps of the semantical theory of dependent type systems.

We construct for any pair (R,LM), where R is a monad on sets and LM is a left module over R, a C-system (contextual category) CC(R,LM) and describe a class of sub-quotients of CC(R,LM) in terms of objects directly constructed from R and LM. In the special case of the monads of expressions associated with nominal signatures this construction gives the C-systems of general dependent type theories when they are specified by collections of judgements of the four standard kinds.

This paper was submitted for publication, but after the first referee's report, it evolved into C-system of a module over a Jf-relative monad. It has been submitted for publication.

I will outline the main ideas of the new approach to foundations of practical mathematics which we call univalent foundations. Mathematical objects and their equivalences form sets, groupoids or higher groupoids. According to Grothendieck's idea higher groupoids are the same as homotopy types. Therefore mathematics may be considered as studying homotopy types and structures on them. Homotopy type theories, the underlying formal deduction system of the univalent foundations allows one to reason about such objects directly.

In this largely expository paper, we construct and investigate a model of the Univalent Foundations of Mathematics in the category of simplicial sets. To this end, we first give a new technique for constructing models of dependent type theory, using universes to obtain coherence. We then construct a (weakly) universal Kan fibration, and use it to exhibit a model in simplicial sets. Lastly, we introduce the Univalence Axiom, in several equivalent formulations, and show that it holds in this model. As a corollary, we conclude that Univalent Foundations are at least as consistent as ZFC with two inaccessible cardinals [provided the Initiality Conjecture of Voevodsky is true].

The main results of the paper are due to Vladimir Voevodsky. He was originally a co-author, but withdrew, in order to prepare a research paper on the result in his own style.

The motivic homotopy categories can be defined with respect to different topologies and different underlying categories of schemes. For a number of reasons (mainly because of the Gluing Theorem) the motivic homotopy category of smooth schemes with respect to the Nisnevich topology plays a distinguished role but in some cases it is desirable to be able to work with all schemes instead of the smooth ones. In this paper we prove that, under the resolution of singularities assumption, the unstable motivic homotopy category of all schemes over a field with respect to the cdh-topology is almost equivalent to the unstable motivic homotopy category of smooth schemes over the same field with respect to the Nisnevich topology.

There are two approaches to the homotopy theory of simplicial (pre-)sheaves. One developed by Joyal and Jardine works for all sites but produces a model structure which is not finitely generated even in the case of sheaves on a Noetherian topological space. The other one developed by Brown and Gersten gives a nice model structure for sheaves on a Noetherian space of finite dimension but does not extend to all sites. In this paper we define a class of sites for which a generalized version of the Brown–Gersten approach works.

These lecture notes cover four topics. There is a proof of the fact that the functors represented by the motivic Eilenberg-Maclane spaces on the motivic homotopy category coincide with the motivic cohomology defined in terms of the motivic complexes. There is a description of the equivariant motivic homotopy category for a finite flat group scheme (over a noetherian base) together with a new characterization of 𝔸1-equivalences. There is a part where we introduce a class of sheaves called solid sheaves. Finally there is a part where we study functors of the form X ⟶ X/G and X ⟶ XW and show that they preserve equivalences between term-wise ind-solid simplicial sheaves.

Google-translate renders that as "A system of paths on a time interval T with a value in the category C is a contravariant functor on the category of sub-intervals in T ordered by inclusion with values in C. Consideration of systems of paths with values in the category of measurable spaces makes it possible to clarify many aspects of the classical theory of Markov processes. I will describe several basic ways of constructing such systems of paths on abstract mathematical objects, in particular, in countable categories. One of the applications of these constructions allows us to give a mathematically rigorous and rather elegant construction of dynamic models emerging in population genetics."

The goal of this paper is to solve the following problem. Consider a population of identical ageless individuals (singletons) where each individual can go through one of the two possible transformations - it can die or it can divide into two. Suppose that the past history of the population was determined by the conditions that the birth (division) rate was constant and equal to 1 and the death rate was an unknown function of time d(t). Suppose further that we know the ancestral tree of the present day population, i.e., for each pair of singletons we know the time distance from the present to their "last common ancestor". Given this data what is the maximal likelihood reconstruction of the death rate function?

In an interview with Roman Mikhailov in 2012, Voevodsky said, of this work: "В результате я выбрал, как сейчас понимаю неправильно, проблему восстановления истории популяций по их современной генетической композиции. Я провозился с этой задачей в общей сложности около двух лет и в конце концов, уже в 2009 году, понял, что то, что я придумывал, бесполезно. В моей жизни, пока, это была, пожалуй, самая большая научная неудача. Очень много работы было вложено в проект, который полностью провалился. Какая-то польза, конечно, все-таки, была - я выучил много из теории вероятности, которую знал плохо, а также узнал много нового про демографию и демографическую историю."

Google-translate renders that as "As a result, I chose, as I now understand incorrectly, the problem of restoring the history of populations according to their modern genetic composition. I took on this task for a total of about two years, and in the end, already in 2009, I realized that what I was inventing was useless. In my life, so far, it was, perhaps, the greatest scientific failure. A lot of work was invested in the project, which completely failed. Of course, there was some benefit, of course - I learned a lot from probability theory, which I knew badly, and also learned a lot about demography and demographic history."

Motivic homotopy theory is a new and in vogue blend of algebra and topology. Its primary object is to study algebraic varieties from a homotopy theoretic viewpoint. Many of the basic ideas and techniques in this subject originate in algebraic topology.

This text is a report from Voevodsky's summer school lectures on motivic homotopy in Nordfjordeid. Its first part consists of a leisurely introduction to motivic stable homotopy theory, cohomology theories for algebraic varieties, and some examples of current research problems. As background material, we recommend the lectures of Dundas [Dun] and Levine [Lev] in this volume. An introductory reference to motivic homotopy theory is Voevodsky's ICM address [Voe98]. The appendix includes more in depth background material required in the main body of the text. Our discussion of model structures for motivic spectra follows Jardine's paper.

In this paper we suggest a new approach to the foundations of mathematics. In fact the adjective "new" in the previous sentence may be superfluous since one can argue that pure mathematics as it is practiced today has no foundations. We have come a long way from where we used to be at the beginning of the century when the thesis that mathematics is that which can be formalized in the framework of the Zermelo-Fraenkel theory became generally accepted. Contemporary constructions and proofs can not be translated in any sensible way into the Zermelo-Fraenkel theory. One can (may be!) translate the categorical definition of group cohomology into the ZF-theory using the Grothendieck’s idea of universes but it is hardly fair to call an approach which requires one to believe in strongly unreachable cardinals in order to interpret a simple algebraic construction sensible.

Voevodsky posted an earlier version on github.

There are two kinds of histories. Histories of the first kind concentrate on a small number of key individuals and interpret the past events through their relation to these individuals. Histories of the second kind are concerned more with the dynamics of large groups of people - migrations, expansions or contractions of whole populations, changes in customs, culture and technology etc. The modern advances in our ability to extract information from the genomes can help to construct booth kinds of histories. Here we are concerned mostly with the histories of the second kind.

In this paper we discuss a number of conjectures concentrated around the notion of the slice filtration and the related notion of the rigid homotopy groups. Many of the ideas discussed below are in greater or lesser degree the result of conversations I had with Fabien Morel, Mike Hopkins and, more recently, Charles Rezk.

We describe a simple construction of the spectral sequence relating algebraic K-theory and motivic cohomology modulo two general conjectures on the structure of the motivic homotopy category. The first conjecture is the motivic analog of the fact that the zero stage of the Postnikoff tower for the (topological) sphere spectrum is the Eilenberg-Maclane spectrum H. The second is the motivic analog of the fact that the functor Ω1Σ1 takes n-connected spaces to n-connected spaces.

The simplest way to motivate the necessity of the motivic stable homotopy category is to refer to the fact that algebraic K-theory does not extend to the the triangulated category of motives. In particular the triangulated category of motives does not provide a sufficient framework to study such a fundamental object as the motivic spectral sequence. The other motivation comes from the cohomological operations but for historic reasons it seems to be less useful.

I hope that the constructions described in these notes will lead to a new model of the stable homotopy theory which will be more friendly for computations questions. Of course one expects that it will be nontrivial to show that the new and the old models agree.

In this paper we construct a bivariant (co-)homology theory on the category of algebraic varieties over a field which admits resolution of singularities. We show that this theory has the standard good properties, such as localization long exact sequences (with respect to the covariant argument) and Mayer-Vietories long exact sequences (with respect to the contravariant argument). We also prove the duality theorem which asserts that for smooth varieties the corresponding covariant and contravariant theories are isomorphic. We further use it to define four "motivic (co-)homology" theories (motivic homology, Borel-Moore motivic homology, motivic cohomlogy and motivic cohomology with compact supports) which are related by duality isomorphisms in the smooth case.

In this paper we study a class of functors called pretheories on the category of smooth schemes over a perfect field. Morally, a pretheory is a contravariant functor equipped with transfers with respect to relative divisors with compact support on smooth relative curves. Among the examples of such functors are K-cohomology, bivariant cycle homology of Friedlander and Gabber ("Cycle spaces and intersection theory", in the book "Topological Methods in Modern Mathematics") and in some sense algebraic singular homology (see "Singular homology of abstract algebraic varieties", by Suslin and Voevodsky). Our main result states that Zariski cohomology with coefficients in a homotopy invariant pretheory is again a homotopy invariant pretheory. Together with some other properties of pretheories this result allows us to prove the Mayer-Vietoris property for algebraic singular homology and in the case when there is resolution of singularities to prove the localization property for algebraic cycle homology. One of the most important technical tools which allows us to deal effectively with pretheories is the Nisnevich topology on algebraic varieties.

In The Origins and Motivations of Univalent Foundations and in the slides for a talk at the IAS, Voevodsky says that the proof of a key lemma (Lemma 4.22) in that earlier preprint and in this one (Lemma 4.23), is wrong, and that a corrected argument was published in Lecture notes on motivic cohomology as Lemma 22.10.

For a scheme X of finite type over a Noetherian scheme S we define a group of relative equidimensional cycles. We show that it is contravariantly functorial with respect to base change and thus provides a presheaf on the category of Noetherian schemes over S. Moreover this presheaf turns out to be a sheaf in a Grothendieck topology called the cdh-topology. The main goal of the paper is to study these Chow sheaves. In the particular case of X being a projective variety over a field of characteristic zero the Chow sheaf of effective cycles of dimension d is representable by the corresponding Chow variety. Even in this case though it turns out to be more convenient to work with sheaves than with varieties. In particular we construct certain short exact sequences of Chow sheaves which in the case of varieties over a field lead to localization long exact sequences in algebraic cycle homology and which do not have any obvious analog for Chow varieties.

Our original goal which finally led to this volume was the construction of "motivic cohomology theory" whose existence was conjectured by A. Beilinson and S. Lichtenbaum. Even though this would seem to be achieved at the end of the third paper, our motivation evolved into a quest for a deeper understanding of various properties of algebraic cycles. Thus, several of the papers presented here do not deal directly with motivic cohomology but rather with basic questions about algebraic cycles.

In this paper we suggest an approach to the construction of the category of mixed motives. The word "motive" was introduced by A. Grothendieck almost thirty years ago to denote objects of the hypothetical semi-simple Q-linear abelian category where the "universal" cohomology theory on the category of smooth projective algebraic varieties takes values. Some fifteen years later the Grothendieck's idea was developed further by P. Deligne, A. Beilinson, S. Lichtenbaum and others to accommodate all algebraic varieties. These new "motives" were called "mixed motives" after the mixed Hodge structures and old Grothendieck's motives were renamed into "pure motives". For all these years the theory of motives was one of the most important unification concepts in algebraic geometry. In its modern form it gives a very coherent picture of how cohomology theories on the category of algebraic varieties should behave. In particular, it provides a natural "explanation" for many apparently unrelated conjectures such as the Bloch-Kato conjecture in the étale cohomology, the Quilten-Lichtenbaum conjecture and the Beilinson-Soulé vanishing conjecture in the algebraic K-theory, the Bloch conjecture on zero cycles and the Grothendieck standard conjectures in the theory of algebraic cycles etc.

Unfortunately, until very recently, the theory of motives and especially the theory of mixed motives remained almost totally hypothetical. While quite a few results which confirmed the feeling that such a theory should exist were obtained no candidates for the category of mixed motives over an arbitrary field were suggested and none of the "standard conjectures" were proved.

This paper is the first one in a series of related papers where we try to develop techniques necessary to construct the theory of (mixed) motives. The fundamental difference of the approach considered here with the one usually used is that we construct a triangulated category of mixed motives instead of the abelian category required by the standard conjectures.

In this paper we prove that a correspondence from a smooth projective variety over a field to itself, which is algebraically equivalent to zero, is nilpotent in the ring of correspondences modulo rational equivalence (with rational coefficients).

Claire Voisin has proved a slightly stronger version of the nilpotence theorem, independently, in the paper Remarks on zero-cycles of self-products of varieties, in the book "Moduli of vector bundles (Sanda, 1994; Kyoto, 1994)", 265-285, Lecture Notes in Pure and Appl. Math., 179, Dekker, New York, 1996.

We study a certain coherence problem for braided monoidal 2-categories. For ordinary braided monoidal categories such a problem is well known to lead to braid groups: If we denote by T(n) the pure braid group on n strands then this group acts naturally on each product A1 ⊗ ··· ⊗ An. It turns out that in the 2-categorical case we have to consider the so-called higher braid group T(2,n) introduced by Manin and Schechtman. The main result is that T(2,n) naturally acts by 2-automorphisms on the canonical 1-morphism A1 ⊗ ··· ⊗ An → An ⊗ ··· ⊗ A1 for any objects A1, ..., An.

This talk is devoted to detailed study of free n-categories and their relations with more "classical" geometric objects. Among these objects we list convex polytopes, their triangulations, configurations of hyperplanes, oriented matroids, and so-called "higher Bruhat orders", introduced by Y. I. Manin and V. V. Schechtman. The base for our study is the notion of a pasting diagram for n-categories introduced by M. Johnson. Though we feel that much of Johnson's theory can be substantially simplified, even in its present state it yields a lot of combinatorial objects, some of which are known, and the others new and unexpected.

In investigating multidimensional generalizations of the Yang-Baxter equation, in three papers Manin and Shekhtman introduced partially ordered sets B(n,k) called higher Bruhat orders. The set B(n,i) is the symmetric group Sn with its weak Bruhat order, and B(n,k+1) is obtained by a factorization from the set of maximal chains in B(n,k). In their papers the connection was pointed out for B(n,k) with arrangements of n hyperplanes in ℝk in general position and also with the structure of the convex hull of a general orbit of Sn in ℝn. In the present note we give an interpretation of B(n,k) as the sets of some k-dimensional strips in an n-dimensional cube. This permits us to clarify the above-mentioned connections, in particular to prove a hypothesis from their papers and disprove another hypothesis of theirs.
