How do I print a PDF that opens within a web browser (i.e. Mozilla, Firefox)?

The web browser may be configured to open a pdf file within the web browser. Adobe Acrobat may open within the browser window. If this happens, then the Adobe menu items will appears beneath the browser menu items. (See picture below):

To print, click on the Print Symbol (if you are in a Web Browser) or click on File->Print The following window should show up:

How do I check the status of my print job?

The School of Mathematics uses CUPS (Common UNIX Printing System)

To check that status of the printer (Check if your job printed):

Go to a Web Browser and type:
http://printhost.math.ias.edu:631/printers/

where is the name of the printer you want to check:
f2,f2d,f3,f3d,f4,f4d,d1,s0,s0d,s1,s1d,s2,s2d,colour,colourd,colour1

How do I print multiple pages per sheet?

If you want to conserve paper or don't want to carry around a lot of paper, it is possible to print multiple pages on a single sheet of paper.

There are two utilities for setting multiple pages on one piece of paper. They are called mpage and psnup

mpage

You can send this output straight to the printer to avoid creating temporary files:

mpage -2 file.ps -Pprinter

See the man page for more info (type man mpage).

psnup

Sometimes mpage will fail on complex PostScript pages.

How do I set/change my default printer?

Find out what printer is your default:

echo $PRINTER

If this does not output anything or is incorrect:

export PRINTER='printer-name'

where 'printer-name' is the printer you want to set:

f2, f2d, f3, f3d, f4, f4d, s0, s0d, s1, s1d, s2, s2d

To find the nearest printer:

find_printer (This only works from a SunRay)

How do I print my file containing foreign characters? When I print it, it comes out garbled.

Try printing to a file first.
In Mozilla, choose File->Print
Next to 'Print To:', click on 'File'
Next to 'File:', type a filename to save it as. It will be saved as a postscript file
Click on 'Print'

Next, convert the file to a pdf:
ps2pdf [original_file.ps] [new_file.ps]
The PDF should print the foreign characters with no problems.

How do I print from the Windows Citrix client?

You may need to add a printer if it is not already defined.

1. Go to Start->Settings->Printers, select Add Printer

2. Click Next at the 'Welcome to the Add Printer Wizard' screen

3. Select Network Printer, then click Next

4. Select Find Printer in the Directory, then click Next

5. Click Find Now, a list of printers will show up.

6. Select the printer you want and click OK

7. Click Select as default printer, click Next

8. Click Finish
 

How do I print from pine?

Go to the Main Menu:
-Select Setup
-Type P for Printer
-Move your cursor to Personally selected print command
-Type A for Add Printer

-It will ask you to type printer name: s0 or s0d for ground floor printer, or you can choose another printer
-It will ask you to type printer command: lpr -P, If you chose s0, then it will be lpr -Ps0
-Type S for Select

-Type E for Exit, then Y to save changes
