How to connect to your IAS home directory via winSCP

winSCP is a free, open source SFTP client that you would install on your own personal Windows desktop or laptop computer. With winSCP, you work on your files on your local computer and then use this application to upload your files to your IAS home directory. You can also use this application to download files from your IAS home directory to your local computer. By using winSCP to store your data in your IAS home directory, you are ensuring that your data is being backed up on a regular basis.

  1. Launch the winSCP.
  2. Click on the Session menu bar option.
  3. Enter the following information:
  • File protocol: select "STFP".
  • Host name: enter "ssh.math.ias.edu" without the quotes.
  • Port number: 22
  • User name: enter your IAS username
  • Password: enter your IAS password.

Click on the Save button:

  1. In the Save session as site window, enter the following:
  • Site Name: leave the default information that appears there.
  • Folder: leave the default of <none>
  • You can click on the boxes next to "Save password" and "Create desktop shortcut" as you see fit.

Click on the OK button.

Now that you have created a session, click on the session that you created and then click on the Login button.

If you did not choose to save you password in Step 3, you will be prompted to enter your IAS password.

Once you are authenticated, the winSCP interface will be cut in half:

  • On the left side are the files and folders on your local computer.
  • On the right side are the files and folders on the School of Math server.
