About 8 months ago, our HP9100C gave this error:

        HARD DISK ERROR CODE 00000004

I tried many things to salvage the data, including freezing it, but nothing seemed to work.

I came across this forum: 9100C hard drive  and someone was looking for an image of the hard drive, but no one had it at the time.

I was reluctant to give get rid of the machine since the only thing wrong with it was the hard drive, so I kept it around.

Today, I checked the thread and someone posted the image.

Here is the location of the hard drive image:
ftp://www.billswifi.com/ (or go to www.BillsWiFi.com and click on the ftp link at the bottom of the page). The user name is 9100, the pass is 9100 too.

Instructions as well as the Manuals are available as well.

UPDATE: You can download the image at:

Image 1 will Extract to a 3 Gig .img File and Image 2 will extract to an 40 Gigabyte Image File.

More information can be found at: http://pariswells.com/blog/research/hp-digital-sender-9100c-hard-disc-error-code-00000004-hard-disc-has-failed

I downloaded the rar file.

Unpacked it:

unrar e 9100C-HDD-Image#2.rar

Which extracted the image New9100C.img

Connected a new hard drive.  First, I wiped a 40GB hard drive. Then I connected it to my machine via USB external hard drive enclosure.

I used fdisk to show what the connected drive is called:

fdisk -l
...
Disk /dev/sdh: 40.0 GB, 40020664320 bytes
64 heads, 32 sectors/track, 38166 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 2048 * 512 = 1048576 bytes

Disk /dev/sdh doesn't contain a valid partition table

Copied image to hard drive:

dd if=New9100C.img of=/dev/sdh

9770671+0 records in
9770670+0 records out
40020664320 bytes (40 GB) copied, 1530.4 seconds, 26.2 MB/s

Put the new hard drive in and the 9100C is functioning again.
