Drush doesn't work after upgrading to 6.22

After using drush to update Drupal Core to 6.22, running drush would not work.

Fatal error: Call to undefined function user_load() in /usr/local/bin/drush/drush.php on line 204
Drush command could not be completed.                                [error]
Drush was not able to start (bootstrap) Drupal.                      [error]
Hint: This error can only occur once the database connection has
already been successfully initiated, therefore this error generally
points to a site configuration issue, and not a problem connecting to
the database.

I was running drush-6.x-3.3.  The newest version is drush-7.x-4.4.

I removed the old drush.  Downloaded and untarred the new drush and drush commands now work.

Thanks for your post. I have tried removing and re-installing before with no success to fix drush.

Then all of a sudden today drush stopped working with the same error you got.

I uninstalled and reinstalled

following http://openspring.net/tip/how-to-install-drush-serverwide-in-less-than-one-minute

and it worked!
