  1. From the Macintosh desktop go to File and select Find...
  2. Sherlock window will open. In the highlighted box at the top, type in Desktop Printer Utility and click find.
  3. Double-click the Desktop Printer Utility application. A New Desktop Printer window should appear:
  4. Select LaserWriter 8 in the drop-down menu.
  5. Click on Printer (LPR) to highlight it and click OK. A new window titled Untitled 1 will open.
  6. In the box labeled LPR Printer Selection, click Change. A dialog box labeled Internet Printer will open. Do not close the Untitled 1 window.
  7. In the Printer Address: field, type the IP address or name of the printer server (printhost.math.ias.edu). In the Printer Queue field, type the name of the printer you wish to connect to. For example, s0d.
  8. After you have entered the queue name and the queue type, click Verify to make sure your computer can see the printer. After clicking on the Verify button, you will see the IP address displayed in small print above the button. If no IP Address appears, double-check that you have correctly typed the queue name or IP Address.
  9. Once the IP Address is verified, click OK. This brings you back to the Untitled 1 window.
  10. At the top of the Untitled 1 window in the PostScript Printer Description box, click Change.
  11. In the dialog box that appears, click once on the Printer Description (PPD) that matches the printer model. If there is no printer description that closely matches the printer model click the Generic button. Click Select to close the dialog box and return to the Untitled 1 window.
  12. At the bottom of the Untitled 1 dialog box, click Create....
  13. When prompted for a name of the printer, rename the printer using either the queue name or a descriptive name (Simonyi 1st Floor, for example) and then click Save.
  14. A printer icon matching the icon in the PostScript Printer Description box should now appear on your desktop.

Printing from Mac OS X over IPP

 

  1. In the apple menu choose "System Preferences..." to open the System Preferences window.
  2. If it's not already selected, choose the "Show All" icon.
  3. Under the hardware heading choose "Print & Fax" to open the Print & Fax window.
  5. Click the "Add" icon.

    or click on the "+" symbol.

  6. In the dialog choose "IP Printing".
  7. In the "Printer Address" box enter the IP address or name of the printer server
    (OS 10.5 and newer: printhost.math.ias.edu  OS 10.4 and older: printhost.math.ias.edu:631).
  8. In the "Queue Name" box enter "printers/", followed by the name of the required raw queue on the print server. Refer to Naming Conventions for help on the queue names.
  9. You may leave "Print Using" as "Generic PostScript Printer". This is optional.
  10. If you choose, you may pick the Printer Model for example "EPSON" and a new list of the models will appear. Then pick the correct model from the list.

Troubleshooting

***If you have OS version 10.4 and older, try replacing printhost.math.ias.edu with printhost.math.ias.edu:631.***

  1. Open a web browser on the Mac and go to http://127.0.0.1:631 to open the CUPS web interface on the Mac. You may be asked for a username and password. username: root.
  2. Select the printer just added which will be called something like " on " and modify it, making sure that "printers" is in the url. eg. "ipp://printhost.math.ias.edu/ipp/epson580" or "ipp://printhost.math.ias.edu/epson580" should be changed to "ipp://printhost.math.ias.edu/printers/epson580". Check and correct all fields as you go through the modify process as some seem to default to other than what you have just set up.

    Note: The previous 2 steps can be done via command line.

    • Open a terminal window and type
      sudo launchctl unload /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/org.cups.cupsd.plist
    • Edit /etc/cups/printers.conf and add or change ipp to printers on the line for the printer.eg. printhost.math.ias.edu:/ipp/s0d or printhost.math.ias.edu://s0d should be changed to printhost.math.ias.edu:/printers/s0d
    • restart cupsd
      On the command line, type: 
      sudo launchctl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/org.cups.cupsd.plist

  3. If required select the line showing the newly added printer in the Printer List and click the "Make Default" icon.
     

Advanced

 If you are comfortable editing your configuration files, you can add the following line to your cupsd.conf, this will add all the printers from our printserver to your machine.

  • open a terminal window and stop cupsd:
    sudo launchctl unload /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/org.cups.cupsd.plist

  • edit /etc/cups/cupsd.conf add this:
    BrowsePoll printhost.math.ias.edu

  • restart cupsd:

    sudo launchctl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/org.cups.cupsd.plist

Connecting to Network Printers Using Mac OSX Lion/Mountain Lion

The following instructions will enable you to connect and print to Institute for Advanced Study networked printers. Before you start, please ensure that you are connected to the Institute’s Wireless Network or Wired Network.

1. Open "Print & Scan" in System Preferences

To open “Print & Scan”, click the Apple icon in the top left of the Desktop. Select the menu item that says “System Preferences”. In the “System Preferences” menu, select “Print & Scan” in the “Hardware” category.
In older versions of Mac OSX the “Print & Scan” option was called “Print & Fax”. For the purpose of these instructions, both of these options refer to the same entity. 1

2. Click the "Add" or "+" Button

In the left hand side of the “Print & Fax” menu there is button labeled “+”. Click “+” to add a new printer.

 

3. Select the "IP" Tab

In the “Add” window, select the “IP” tab from the the top of the window. This tab is denoted by a globe looking figure.

4. Enter the following information

Please enter or change the information in the following fields to the values listed below.

Address: printhost.math.ias.edu

Protocol: Internet Printing Protocol - IPP

Queue: /printers/<queue_name>
*please replace <queue_name> with the corresponding printer queue listed in the table below

Name: Enter the name of the printer listed in the table below.

Location: Enter the location of the printer listed in the table below.

Use: Select “Generic PostScript Printer”. 2

2. In the event that “Generic PostScript Printer" option does not work, consult the table below and download and select the driver that matches the printer you wish to print to.

5. Click "Add"

Once all the fields are completely filled in, press [Add] to add the printer. The printer should now be added to your listed printers.

6. Removing the added printer

1. To remove an added network printer simply select:
Apple Icon > System Preferences > Hardware > Print & Scan

2. Select the printer you wish to remove from the list on the right hand side of the window.

3. Click “Remove” or “-” button at the bottom of list box.

4. Click [OK] to confirm the action. Your printer will have been removed from the list.
