Sun-Yung Alice-Chang, Ruth Charney, Antonella Grassi, Chuu-Lian Terng, Karen Uhlenbeck, and Karen Vogtmann, Organizers of the Program for Women in Mathematics, welcome you as a participant in the 2005 Women's Program.
The Program for Women in Mathematics is sponsored by the Institute for Advanced Study and Princeton University. This program is designed to bring women students in contact with postdoctoral scholars and professional mathematicians and to encourage women to further their mathematics education. The program consists of lectures, seminars, working problem groups, and mentoring and networking sessions. Students and mentors take part in the life of the Institute for Advanced Study and have the opportunity to meet and converse with mathematicians and other scholars in residence at the Institute.
Registration will be on Monday, May 16, from noon until 5:00 p.m. in the Fuld Hall Common Room.
Arrival
If you are coming in on the AIRPORTER from Newark or JFK or by taxi from the train station, you will be dropped off at Fuld Hall at the Institute for Advanced Study. If you arrive by car, park in lot A and enter the brick building with the clock tower (Fuld Hall). The Reception Office is located through the main doors of Fuld Hall. Registration will take place between 12:00 noon and 5:00 p.m. on Monday, May 16, in the Fuld Hall Common Room (just beyond the Reception Office). A final schedule, lunch tickets, Institute Access cards, and other important materials will be given to you at registration. If you plan to arrive after 5:00 p.m., your registration materials can be obtained at the buffet supper in the Coffee Lounge.
A reception and informal supper buffet will be held in the Coffee Lounge in the Dining Hall starting at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, May 16. If you arrive between 5:30 and 7:00 p.m., please come directly to the Dining Hall (the large modern building to the right of Fuld Hall).
Common Rooms
The Fuld Hall Common Room is open throughout the day and night. There is an excellent selection of domestic and foreign newspapers and periodicals. Tea is served to the Institute community in this room from 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. There is also a small Common Room on the second floor of Simonyi Hall. Women's Program participants are welcome in all common areas of the Institute. Please remember these areas are for the use of everyone in the Institute community.
Computer Usage Information
Computer Rooms
There are two computer clusters on campus: Simonyi Hall (#028, on the ground floor) and the Historical Studies/Social Science Library Annex. Four extra terminals are available in the Leibowitz classroom of Simonyi Hall (Room S-114). You may use telnet/ssh or Netscape/Mozilla from any of these machines or from machines in the program's offices.
To use Computing equipment at the Institute, you must read and accept the Computer Use Policy available at http://www.ias.edu/privacy.php. Please also see the Computer Usage Information sheet in the participant packet for detailed information about computer usage.
For assistance with computing, dial extension 8012 or visit office #002 or #003 in Simonyi Hall.
For assistance with toners. paper or other supplies in the Historical Studies/Social Science Library Annex, please call Karen Downing (8371) or Marcia Tucker (8276) or go to the Historical Studies/Social Science Library.
Food and beverages are not permitted in any of the computer rooms. Personal Computer Equipment Wireless (802.11b/g) is available in Simonyi Hall and various other locations on campus. Note: you must select "wireless" when registering your wireless device. The wireless ESSID is IAS, there is no WEP key. Printing Projector
You may bring your own computing equipment and use it in the housing units while you are at the Institute. To sign up for network access you will need to have a computer with either an Ethernet or wireless card. To register for access, please visit http://regdhcp.net.ias.edu/reg.
Printing is provided in Simonyi Hall via the printer s0d (Room 028) and sld (Outside classroom). Color printing is available on the printers colour (Simonyi Hall Room 028) and colour1 (Third floor Fuld Hall).
An LCD projector is available in the Simonyi Lecture Hall. Please call extension 8012 for assistance with the projector equipment.
Security
For security purposes, computer rooms are locked in the evening and on weekends; if you wish to use a computer room during that time, use your Institute access card.
Software
If you are using a PC in the Historical Studies/Social Science Library Annex, do not attempt to install any software on the hard disk. Only authorized Institute-purchased software should be installed on the hard disks. Programs installed on the equipment in the computer rooms and in the offices are the property of the Institute and must not be copied. The copying of software is illegal.
Dress
Dress is informal during the Women's Program. You should pack a pair of sneakers or walking shoes for trips into town or walks in the Institute woods.
Fitness Center and Recreation
The Institute's Fitness Center is available to Women's Program participants, as are the Institute tennis courts. The Fitness Center is located in the same building as Crossroads Nursery School, at the end of Olden Lane. If you wish to have access to the Fitness Center, you may obtain a waiver form at the Reception Office in Fuld Hall, which you will need to sign and return to the Receptionist. The receptionist will then encode your Institute Access Card. The tennis courts are located behind 310 South Olden Lane, and can be accessed using your Institute Access Card.
Ground transportation to Princeton

Driving directions and information about travel by air or train can be found on the Institute website at http://www.admin.ias.edu/as
There is regularly scheduled train service from New York City and Newark Airport and train service from Philadelphia. From Penn Station (New York City or Newark) take New Jersey Transit (1-800-772-2222) or Amtrak (1-800-872-7245) to Princeton Junction. From Philadelphia take Amtrak to Princeton Junction or SEPTA (1-215-580-7800) to Trenton and change trains to Princeton Junction via New Jersey Transit. Call for current schedule. Taxis are available at the station.
Buses leave every half hour from Port Authority Bus Terminal (New York City) to Princeton via Suburban Transit (1-800-222-0492). Purchase a ticket at the Suburban Transit window on the main floor before proceeding to the gate. Get off at Palmer Square in Princeton. Taxis are available.
Housing and Work Space
Women's Program non-local participants will be housed in Institute apartments on a shared basis. Institute housing is in great demand and we cannot accommodate arrivals before May 16 and departures after May 27. Sheets and towels will be provided. All are self-housekeeping units with equipped kitchens including coffee-makers, full bathrooms, and living rooms. The apartments have ethernet connections and are air-conditioned; however they do not have microwaves, alarm clocks, or TVs. The Women's Program office has a small supply of alarm clocks for loan to participants.
The apartments are within easy walking distance of Fuld Hall, Simonyi Hall and the Dining Hall, and about a 20-25 minute walk from the center of Princeton.
Apartment keys will be held at the Reception Office in Fuld Hall. If you arrive after 5:00 p.m. on Monday, May 16, there will be a public safety officer on duty at the Reception Office. He will be able to give you your apartment key. If the public safety officer is not at the Reception Office when you arrive, he is checking the campus and will return shortly. If you need to contact the public safety officer, you may use the telephone on the desk across from the Reception Office and dial 5460. You may reach a voice mail box. Leave a message and the public safety officer will come to Fuld Hall to assist you, generally within 15 minutes of your call.
Institute Access Cards
Please have your Women's Program Name Badge and Institute Access Card with you at all times. This card will identify you as being part of the Institute and allow you access into buildings after 5:00 p.m. The card will give you access to Simonyi Hall, the Mathematics-Natural Sciences Library and Library Stack Room in Fuld Hall, the Computer Labs (Simonyi and Historical Studies-Social Science Library Annex), the Activity Center and Laundry Room (in the Housing Complex), the Fitness Center (for those who have signed the waiver), the tennis courts and the Dining Hall. To use the card, place face down in the card reader outside the entrance of each building or room. In some instances you may need to use the card to exit areas as well. Further details may be found in the sections entitled Library and Computer Rooms. Access Cards must be returned to the Women's Program office before you leave the Institute.
Laundry Room
There is a self-service laundry facility in the Institute Housing Complex. To use the machines, you must first purchase a laundry card from the Reception Office in Fuld Hall. The cards come in $5 or $10 amounts plus a $3 deposit. If you return the card to the Reception Office before you leave, you will get the deposit back plus a refund of any money remaining on the card.
Library
Your Institute Access Card will allow 24-hour access to the Mathematics-Natural Sciences Library located on the second floor of Fuld Hall. The Library contains over 30,000 volumes and has a distinguished collection of journals. Momota Ganguli, Librarian, is in the Library from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m., weekdays. All circulating materials must remain on Institute premises; books and bound periodicals may be taken to an office on campus. Reference books and unbound periodicals should be used only in the Library. To borrow a book, sign both cards found in the back of the volume, indicate Women's Program next to your name, and leave the cards in the tray at the desk in either the Main Reading Room or the East Stack Room. See the librarian if you are unable to find a book. Please keep the Library doors closed after hours.
Meals
Meals for Women's Program participants begin with dinner May 16 and end with lunch on May 27. (Included are breakfast, lunch, and dinner on weekdays.) The Dining Hall is open Monday through Friday for breakfast, 8:00-11:00 a.m., and for lunch, 12:00 noon-1:30 p.m. A supply of meal tickets to last through the program will be given to you. Meals are served cafeteria style. Juice, coffee, tea, cold cereal and baked goods are available for breakfast and there are hot and cold meat and vegetarian entrees, sandwiches, soups, fruit and desserts available for lunch. Please present one breakfast or lunch ticket to the cashier after making your selection.
Dinnertime is a great opportunity for informal discussion, and during the week, meals for the entire group will be ordered from area restaurants. In addition, there will be special dinners planned in advance. All of these meals are fully funded by the Women's Program.
Participants are on their own for meals on Saturday and Sunday. There are many restaurants in the center of Princeton and on Route 1. A WaWa convenience store is located at the intersection of Alexander Road and University Place in Princeton. A natural foods store, Wild Oats, is located on Nassau Street at the north end of town. McCaffrey's Supermarket, is located at the Princeton Shopping Center. The Institute van makes regular trips to town. Please check the schedule in your packet.
Special Dinners:
Monday, May 16 at 6:00 p.m. Informal welcome buffet in the Coffee Lounge in the Dining Hall Material will be available for poster construction after dinner.
Thursday, May 26 at 6:30 p.m. Closing barbeque dinner in the Birch Garden located outside of the Institute Dining Hall (Rain location: Institute Dining Hall).
Messages and Notices
A portable bulletin board is located in the lobby of Simonyi Hall and messages to participants, shuttle schedules, notices about seminars, activities, sign-up sheets, etc. will be posted there. The Women's Program office is located at 310 South Olden Lane, Room #104. Office hours are from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Check Cashing Service
Personal and traveler's checks, up to $200, may be cashed at the Reception Office in Fuld Hall from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. If you wish to cash an Institute reimbursement check, it will be necessary to go to PNC Bank at 76 Nassau Street in Princeton.
Expense Form for Reimbursements
The expense form in the participant packet is to be used for reimbursement of transportation and meal expenses incurred during your travel to and from the Women's Program. Please fill out the expense form, attach original receipts, and bring it to the office at 310 South Olden Lane, Room #104, or mail your form and receipts to the Women's Program Office.
Please save your receipts. Requests for reimbursement must be accompanied by a receipt - no reimbursements can be made without a receipt. For airfare reimbursement, submit your e-ticket itinerary along with your inbound boarding pass.
Fax and Mail Service
There is a fax machine in the Reception Office on the first floor of Fuld Hall. The fax number is 609-924-8399. The Receptionist is available to send a fax weekdays 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. A fax cover page must accompany all requests for fax transmittals; a supply of the cover pages may be found at the Reception desk. There is a charge for outgoing faxes.
There is a Mail Information Center in the hallway of the lower level of Fuld Hall, adjacent to Building B. A postage scale is located there for weighing letters and small parcels. Airbills, envelopes, and information for express mail services are located in this area along with train and bus schedules.
U.S. Postage Stamps may be purchased at the Reception Office in Fuld Hall. There is outgoing mail collection from this office several times a day.
Photocopy Machines
Photocopy machines are controlled by a card system called VendaCard.; Each machine has a usage control unit activated by a card. If you need to make copies, contact one of the teaching assistants in the program or come to the program office (310 South Olden Lane, Room #104) to borrow a VendaCard. There is a copier on the main floor of Simonyi Hall and on the second floor of Fuld Hall. Please bring large or complex copying projects to the office to be done by the staff.
Posters
Advanced graduate students and postdocs are invited to bring posters about their research for display. All program participants are invited to bring four 8 x 12 sheets of paper with pictures of friends and activities, typed descriptions of mathematical activities, hobbies and ambitions. We will provide half-sheets of poster board, tape, markers for headings, and glue. Posters will be on display at the Institute during the program. We appreciate your involvement in this activity and ask that you bring your poster to the first dinner on Monday, May 16. Basic supplies will be available at that time should you need to finish your poster after traveling. Generally the posters are left on display during the Women's Program, and you may take them home with you when you leave. For ease of traveling, we recommend that you use smaller size poster paper.
Schedule
The Women's Program schedule is available on the website, and is updated on a daily basis. A full schedule will be included in the registration packet. Most lectures will be held in the Seminar Room of Simonyi Hall (School of Mathematics), review sessions and research seminars will meet in Simonyi Hall or the West Building (School of Historical Studies and School of Social Science), and the Women in Science Seminar will meet in the Dilworth Room in the lower level of the Dining Hall. Working groups will be assigned on the first day. Visit the Women's Program website for updates.
Telephones
The telephone in your apartment is for local calls. If you wish to make long distance calls, please use your calling card or credit card. Public pay phones are located in Fuld Hall, Simonyi Hall, and the Dining Hall. The Institute's house phones may be used to call extensions within the Institute campus including the housing complex. The Women's Program office is 8118.
Tour of the Institute Campus
An orientation tour of the Institute campus will be held at 4:30 p.m. on Monday, May 16. Participants will meet in the Fuld Hall Common Room. Tea is served from 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. each weekday in the Fuld Hall Common Room.
Transportation in Princeton
The Institute provides free shuttle service between the Institute, the town of Princeton, and Princeton University. Scheduled service runs Monday through Friday, with an abbreviated schedule on Saturdays. The van also makes scheduled stops at the Princeton Shopping Center where a grocery store, a drug store, restaurants, a book store and other specialty shops are located.
