I'll give a brief survey of Heegaard Floer homology, one of the latest and most powerful descendants of the Gauge theories of the 80's and 90's, and I'll discuss established and conjectured connections between Heegaard Floer homology and Khovanov homology. We'll see how some of these connections can be used to study contact geometry on 3-manifolds.
